A week ago Michael Arrington’s Tech Crunch article http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/10/31/scamville-the-social-gaming-ecosystem-of-hell/ uncovered how unethical led gen ad campaigns were a significant revenue contributor to some of the largest social gaming companies. This is a potential devastating blow to this new market segment and the immediate future of the new app economy. The importance of ensuing customer trust and brand integrity can not be overstated. Once trust is lost the road back is rarely travelled successfully. Thus, it was with anxious delight that I read Mark Pincus’ (CEO Zynga) responses to the crisis http://markpincus.typepad.com/.

Leadership is always critical, but never more so than at the beginning of a crisis. It is at this point that we have the best opportunity to control our destiny. Customers will forgive and even rally behind companies that admit errors in judgment, but will desert those that fail to step-up and instead hide behind press releases and legal departments.

Social gaming is situated at the forefront of a massive new burst in innovation and delivering services to consumers. Just as CD-ROM and PC gaming gave way to consoles, as the preferred platform for home entertainment; consoles are in the beginning of a potential death-spiral and will seemingly be replaced by social and mobile platforms.

The future will unfold to us in due course and it seems that with the leadership being demonstrated by Mark Pincus, Zynga could be the leader in the new app economy.

I am starting this blog as I start another journey in my life. For the last several years I have spent most of my waking hours, and some others, being consumed with how to help bring the next generation of online gaming to kids. As Knowledge Adventure’s Vice President Operations my responsibilities included the design and implementation of a community development strategy utilizing a variety of social media tools. I was joined in this process by an exceptional group of individuals who helped guide the strategy and ensure that the brand entered social networking channels as a contributing voice to the existing dialogue. Together we built the foundation of a social media effort that has started to bring the JumpStart brand to a new generation of Moms and their children.

I am lucky to of had this opportunity!

Everything changed on Monday when Knowledge Adventure announced a round of lay-offs, in which I was included. I could say I was surprised, but I really wasn’t. I was however deeply disappointed that my opportunity to work with the exceptional team that we had assembled had come to an end. People are the key ingredient in any business and I have always especially enjoyed working with individuals just beginning their careers. So much can be accomplished when everyone is included and we don’t care who gets credit.

So now I move on to new and unknown opportunities. The future has never been more exciting. I look backwards only to remember these wonderful people and to find a new challenge where perhaps the team can be reassembled so we can climb a mountain together.
